In our experience, almost every financial institution whether small or large has Excel models in daily use for portfolio valuations , assisting with trading strategies, position management, FX
monitoring and hedging, risk analysis and private market and credit valuations. Sometimes these models play an integral part of the daily operational processes perhaps feeding into a mainstream system or bridging the gap in features from a mainstream system or pre or post processing of data going to or coming back from Prime Brokers and Fund Administrators. Perhaps one is used to calculate Fund Performance waterfall calculations or run a daily risk analysis or VAR calculations or to send out reports to investors. We also work on projects with any type of business that requires help in general modelling or the preparation of Financial Statements for Budgeting, Forecasting or daily Management Accounts. Our solutions range from company valuation models including full P&L, Balance Sheet, Cashflow and financial forecasting to data processing (often the glue between disparate financial systems), dashboards and financial reporting.

Whatever the exact use, these models that are used as part of daily operations need to be robust and reliable while also being easy to use. This reduces the operational risk coming from typical spreadsheet errors such as hard coding and calculation errors (incorrect formula), or not being used correctly. These typical models can also be time consuming as multiple checks and operations may be needed to keep them up to date and each of these presents the opportunity for additional spreadsheet errors.

The solution is to take these models and transform them into robust Excel Applications. Still easy to use and understand but built with formulas that can’t break and supplemented with some Visual Basic code to automate and validate data. The client will have access to the full model and all the source code but when in use, it will be protected from any structural change and introduction of errors by users.
